Othello’s downfall is caused by his lack of character judgment, but it is also made possible by the villain Iago through his manipulative ways, his pre-built reputation, and his use of that reputation. Othello’s lack of judgment causes his downfall in that he chooses to trust Iago, even to the exclusion of others.

After reading this tragedy and seeing how manipulative, evil, and deceptive Iago was throughout the plot, this statement seems logical. But upon closer analysis, it is obvious that many other factors contributed to the downfall of Othello, and Iago was.Since Othello trusts Iago, he believes in his lies of having found Desdemona in a compromising situation with Cassio. As a matter of fact, Iago corrupts Othello’s mind when he makes him listen to a fake conversation between Cassio and Desdemona. The downfall of Othello was self inflicted because Emilia and Iago were his employees.Othello's downfall is caused by the ruinous effects of jealousy, and this is shown in Othello's refusal to trust Emilia, Cassio, and Desdemona. As Othello is unwittingly drawn into Iago's scheme, he loses his ability to trust others, even when he has little reason not to.
